How do I plant my tree?

Step 1:

Make a planting hole twice the size of the tree's root ball/pot.

Step 2:

Break up the walls of the dug hole with the shovel.

Step 3:

Add a planting hole improver if required.

Step 4:

Plant the tree as high as it was in the container.

Step 5:

Make a raised border around the tree with soil for easy watering.

Step 6:

Place two tree stakes a 30cm from the tree and attach them to the stakes with natural binding material.

Step 7:

Clear a 1-metre diameter tree bed of plantings and keep it that way for the first few years.

Step 8:

During the dry period, water densely, on average 10 litres once a week. If in doubt, always contact us.

A planting leaflet is included with every delivery.

Advice:

The average walnut tree does not like a wet location, so make sure you plant it at a slightly higher spot in your garden so that the tree does not end up in a puddle of water during the winter.

About the varieties

These varieties originated in North America but were later spread by the Native Americans, hence their Native American names. The trees grow to an average height of 10–15 meters but are easy to prune and can be kept smaller if desired. After about 4 years, they begin to bear their first fruits. This package of pecan varieties has been assembled with the aim of ensuring good pollination for fruit production. Pecan trees require warm and relatively long summers to achieve good production in northern climates; we are currently working with the earliest possible varieties, which we hope will ripen well even in Northern Europe.

 

Carya i. Pawnee

One of the larger nuts in the Carya family. Ripening begins in September, which is earlier than most pecans. The fruit’s oil content is very high, which is why the Pawnee nut is sometimes specifically sought after. The Carya i. Pawnee is partially self-pollinating, but we recommend planting it alongside pollinator varieties. The Pawnee is known for its high fruit yield. Additionally, the Pawnee pollinates many other varieties, such as the Mohawk and the Wichita.

 

Carya i. Mohawk

The Mohawk’s pecan nuts are, on average, even larger than the Pawnee’s and have a buttery flavor. It is also a high-yielding variety, which is why it is often planted in combination with the Pawnee. The flowering and ripening period is about 1–2 weeks later than the Pawnee’s but is also relatively early compared to other varieties.

 

Carya i. Wichita

The Wichita pecan nuts are slightly smaller than those of the Pawnee and Mohawk but are known for their excellent flavor. Ripening begins in mid- to late October. The Pawnee is a good cross-pollinator for this variety.

    Ich war sehr zufrieden mit den drei Pekannussbäumen, die ich aus Deutschland erhalten habe. Die Lieferung erfolgte sehr schnell und die Qualität der Pflanzen ist erstklassig. Jetzt freue ich mich auf mein Pekannussbaum-Experiment. Hier in Dänemark kann man keine verschiedenen Sorten kaufen, aber jetzt kenne ich einen Ort, wo man das kann.
