Buy soft fruit

Soft fruit, also known as small fruit, includes delicious varieties such as blackberries, raspberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants, gooseberries, blueberries and honeyberries. These fruit plants are popular for their rich flavour, high nutritional value and ease of cultivation. At De Nootsaeck, we offer a wide range of small fruit plants, suitable for both large and small gardens, vegetable gardens and food forests!

The history of small fruits

Small fruits have been cultivated in Europe and Asia for centuries. Many varieties originally grew in forests and along forest edges, where they were discovered by humans and selected for flavour, size and yield. Red and blackcurrants were already popular in medieval monastery gardens, whilst raspberries and blackberries grew wild across much of Europe. Today, there are countless improved varieties available that are renowned for their high yield, excellent flavour and good disease resistance.

Soil and site requirements

Most small fruit varieties grow best in a sunny to lightly shaded position. Fertile, humus-rich and well-drained soil ensures optimal growth and fruit set. Raspberries, blackberries and currants like plenty of moisture, but cannot tolerate having their feet wet for long periods. Blueberries are an exception to this and prefer acidic soil with a low pH value.

By choosing the right location and regularly enriching the soil with organic matter, you can enjoy healthy plants and a bountiful harvest for years to come.

Flowering and harvest

Small fruit plants usually flower in spring with attractive blossoms that attract many bees and other pollinators. Depending on the species and variety, the harvest takes place from June through to September. Raspberries and blackberries can often be picked for several weeks in a row, whilst red and blackcurrants usually ripen in a single period.

Our small fruit plants can be planted for most of the year, except during periods of frost. Regular pruning promotes healthy growth, an open plant structure and a higher yield. The pruning method varies depending on the fruit type and variety.
