About Corylus avellana 'Melchior'

The Melchior hazel is a rare, hardy, red-leaved hazel also known as a “trazel,” because it is a hybrid of Corylus colurna and Corylus avellana. The tree is well-suited for smaller gardens due to its relatively compact growth habit and will eventually reach a height of 6–8 meters. In winter and early spring, the ‘Melchior’ blooms with striking yellow catkins. In the fall, it produces a bountiful harvest of tasty, edible hazelnuts. Thanks to its attractive, regular growth habit, the tree requires little pruning and is both an ornamental and a useful addition to the garden.

Nut Quality

The hazelnuts from ‘Melchior’ have a rich, sweet flavor and can be eaten both fresh and roasted. They are also suitable for use in baked goods, salads, and other dishes. For a good harvest, we recommend planting another variety alongside it, such as Corylus Freeoka, Chinoka, Dundee, and various other varieties.
