Walnut tree Juglans regia 1239 (‘Red Danube walnut’)
The walnut tree Juglans regia 1239 (“Rote Donaunuss”) is native to Ybbs on the Danube (Austria) and also called Red Danube or Red Danube Walnut. This walnut tree has medium to strong vigor, forms a large crown and produces medium-sized, flavorful nuts with a (purple) red center. The nuts ( 3.8 X 3.0 cm.) have a fairly hard shell. The tree buds in the spring mid to late. With a pollinator variety like Bucanneer, the Rote Donau produces more fruit. Due the beautiful red nuts it makes this variety very popular.
