Walnut tree Juglans regia 1239 (‘Red Danube walnut’)
The walnut tree Juglans regia 1239 (‘Rote Donaunuss’) originates from Ybbs on the Danube (Austria) and is also called Red Danube or Red Danube Walnut. This walnut tree has medium to strong vigour, forms a large crown and produces medium-sized, flavourful nuts with a (purple) red centre. The nuts ( 3.8 X 3.0 cm.) have a hard shell and are sometimes difficult to crack. The tree buds in mid- to late spring. With a pollinator variety, the Rote Donau produces more fruit. Its red nut makes it, like the Red Moselle nut, popular as a special eye-catcher with confectioners.
