About the Mohawk
Carya illoinensis “Mohawk” is one of the most popular species in commercial orchards due to its large fruits and high productivity. The tree is partially self-pollinating, but for a high yield we recommend planting a pollinator alongside it. Carya i “Pawnee” is very suitable for this. The tree originates from America. The height of a mature tree is approximately 15-18 metres. The Carya illinoinensis “Mohawk” requires little maintenance but does need annual pruning. With proper pruning, the tree can also be kept smaller. The leaves of the tree have a very beautiful bright green colour and turn an attractive golden yellow in autumn.
Quality of the nut
The Mohawk produces one of the largest nuts in the pecan family and begins to ripen in October. This is relatively early compared to many other pecan varieties. The nut contains excellent vitamins and minerals such as vitamins E, A and B. They also contain zinc, magnesium and potassium, which are very good for the heart. Pecans are also widely used in dishes such as salads.
